About Me

Gavin Miller was born in Newport, Wales and read Chemistry with Medicinal Chemistry at UMIST where he was awarded an MChem. Continuing his studies at the University of Manchester, Gavin undertook a PhD in carbohydrate chemistry (investigating multivalency).

He then undertook PDRA positions at Brown University (polyketides) and St Andrews University (inositol mimetics). Gavin then worked in industry, firstly at Ferring Pharmaceuticals, on the design of new treatments for primary dysmenorrhea and secondly at Peakdale Molecular on the design of an anti-nicotine vaccine.

Gavin returned to academia and the University of Manchester in 2009, firstly as a PDRA in the Manchester Institute of Biotechnology developing chemical synthesis approaches to heparan sulfate oligosaccharides and secondly as a fixed-term lecturer, in 2013, within the School of Chemistry. He took up his current lectureship in chemistry at Keele in 2015.

About Me

Xi Chen received her B.S. in Chemistry from Xiamen University in 1994 and her Ph.D. in Biological/Organic Chemistry from Wayne State University in 2000. She worked in Neose Biotechnologies, Inc. for two and a half years before joined the faculty in the Department of Chemistry at the University of California-Davis in August 2003. Her research group is interested in synthesizing and studying complex carbohydrate-containing structures. Xi Chen has received NSF CAREER Award, Beckman Young Investigator Award, 2007 CAPA Distinguished Junior Faculty Award, 2008 Thieme Chemistry Journal Award, and 2008 Young Investigator Fellowship Award given by the American Chemical Society Division of Carbohydrate Chemistry. She is an Alfred P. Sloan Research Fellow, a Camille Dreyfus Teacher-Scholar, and a UC-Davis Chancellor’s Fellow.
