I sold Glycomix Ltd to Carbosynth Ltd in 2016 and now work for Carbosynth as Scientific Director Biopolymers with the specific task of setting up a polysaccharide division in the company.  We have just completed a 'Toolbox' covering polysaccharide classification, applications, extraction/purification, structural analysis (primary, secondary, tertiary) and a review section covering polysaccharides from plants, algae, lichens, microbes, fungi and animal tissues.  This includes also a catalogue of polysaccharide products.

I formed Glycomix in 2007 following the successful sale of Dextra Laboratories, now a wholly owned subsidiary of New Zealand Pharmaceuticals and bring many years of experience to the management of chemistry and the life sciences. As joint founder of Dextra Laboratories I was a director of the team that developed Dextra into a seriously successful Glycobiology company with a catalogue of key research carbohydrates and a specialist custom synthesis business focussed on sugar chemistry.

As a senior research manager at Tate & Lyle Research I helped to bring a number of important projects to market including Xanthan Gum and Sucralose. I was also in the research team lead by Professor Sir Dai Rees in Edinburgh that demonstrated how polysaccharides form networks and highly organized structures in living tissues which have had enormous significance in the food and life science industries.

In the science of carbohydrates I have a particular interest in the chemistry of carbohydrate polymers with over 30 papers, books and patents to date.

Pedro Cintas (Moreno is my mother's name, which is usually added in most names of Spaniards and Latin Americans) teaches general chemistry and organic chemistry since 1990 at the University of Extremadura, Badajoz campus, Spain. He earned a Ph.D degree in carbohydrate chemistry (1987, mentors: Juan C. Palacios and M. Avalos); post-doctoral activities: University of Geneva (Switzerland) on asymmetric synthesis of N-alkylated amino acids (1989-1990; mentor: Wolfgang Oppolzer).

Research interests: carbohydrates as chiral scaffolds; green activation technologies focused on ultrasound and microwaves; computational chemistry; asymmetric methodologies.

Stereocontrol and other aspects of chemical glycosylation. Expeditious strategies for the synthesis of complex oligosaccharides and glycoconjugates: chemoselectivity and orthogonality of modern glycosyl donors. Transition metal complexes in synthetic carbohydrate chemistry: direction of the stereoselectivity of glycosylation, temporary deactivation, etc. Fully synthetic therapeutics based on synthetic oligosaccharides and glycoconjugates (anti-cancer, anti-bacterial, anti-septic, etc.). Solid phase and surface chemistry: application to stereoselective glycosylation and rapid assembly of complex oligosaccharides and glycoconjugates.

I am a synthetic carbohydrate chemist with a long interest in the mechanism of the glycosylation reaction.  I am at the National Research Council of Canada, the Institute for Biological Sciences, where my group synthesizes predominantly glycoconjugates for immunological studies.  We make glycolipids, glycoamino acids for glycopeptides, oligosaccharide fragments of cell surface carbohydrates typically from bacteria and work on protecting group chemistry.  We have ongoing projects in adjuvant development, sialidase inhibitors, innate immunity modulators, glycopeptide vaccines and glycosylation chemistry.
